A recent platter from the suburban soda kiln. Probably my one of favorite soda glazed platters. Mostly flashing slips (bauer and a iron slip) but a little blue glaze was sprayed in there as well.

Finding my inner vishnu… the winter me
Yep, the days are getting shorter, the temp is a little cooler and leaves are falling. I begin to contemplate the whole Vishnu and Lord Shiva relationship again and what it means to me. And all I can think of is… Time to change the old facebook avatar again. Well, I guess the other one wasn’t quite so old, but sorta creepy looking and I was certainly getting tired of it.
I’ve had this idea in my head for quite some time, but didn’t really want to take the wheel down off the blocks, shove everything out of the way, take some shots, move the wheel, take more shots, move the wheel again, take more shots, and then get it in photoshop only to find my head was cut off…
Friday, Gina was working in the studio and I challenged her to a wrestling match and won, and my prize was she had to sit there and take my insanely narcissistic facebook avatar photo.

Unexpected gifts…
Just a quick note to say, if you want to spread a little happiness in this world, send someone a gift out of the blue. I just got a book in the mail from my brother, and it completely made my day. Aside from the fact that I am desperate for something to read at the moment (my last two books have been poker related), it…
“…follows the fortunes of an aging potter, Cipriano Algor, beginning with his weekly delivery of plates to the Center … half of his regular pottery shipment is rejected, and he is told that the consumers now prefer plastic tableware…”
It’s “The Cave”, by Jose Saramago. I’ve read “Blindess” by him and loved it (another gift from my bro), although I could not stay awake during the movie, so go with the book if you have the choice. Anyways, looking forward to reading this one for sure!
Unfortunately, the unexpected gift also made me miss my brother terribly, but looking forward our next get together.
New pots…
etsy-birdmug4, originally uploaded by mudstuffing.
So there’s some new pots in my etsy shop from the last firing. A few coffee makers too, but they are guaranteed to go fast.
This mug was glazed in turner’s white, which tends to go matte when refired for the decal firing, but I like it better matte, in fact I like most all matte white flavors over glossy white flavors… unless it’s glossy and matte white together, which is the bee’s knees.
Also, this in my first venture/load using a dark stoneware clay body - Orangestone from HW. I like the way the white breaks, but can get dark real fast with most other glazes.

Tea pots from recent firing
blog-teapots2, originally uploaded by mudstuffing.
A couple of tea pots from the last load. Had to photograph them for a customer and now trying to decide whether to decal them or not. The crystalization in the glaze is wonderful, and I know if I fire it again for the decals, those areas are going to go matte.
I recently regretted decaling a mug for a customer. The mug was awesome as is, but after firing it again, I completely hate it….

It could be worse…
So, as I was peekign through peeps on Saturday waiting for the kiln to cool, I noticed my back stack was leaning against the stack in front of it…. uh oh… not good. Once I was finally able to get it un bricked, I could see that a kiln post had shattered caused the whole stack to slump in the middle and lean forward. I could tell there were a few pieces on the top that were “kissing” - permanently glazed glued together - pancakers and a few large vessels.
I was able to unload the kiln without the whole thing collapsing - whew! and just a few pots had debris from the post littered in their bottoms.
The post that collapsed was just an inch or two tall. Not sure why it did, but think I’ll be investing in some new posts for the next firing and ditching any that are questionable.
All seems ok on the frontside…
all the pots unloaded…
kissing pots…
Wine cooler set from the load…
